Tips for Creating User Names

HMH is aware that many of our customers are working toward a standardized user name and password schema that is applicable to multiple platforms. ThinkCentral requires only that user names be unique on a per-school basis. If you are looking to standardize your user names and passwords across the ThinkCentral and Holt McDougal Online (my.hrw.com) platforms, then you must use globally unique user names.

User Name Data Rules

The following rules apply to the ThinkCentral and Holt McDougal Online (my.hrw.com) Username field:

      Minimum–maximum characters: 5–75

Valid values: A–Z, a–z, 0–9, and the following supported symbols acceptable: !#$%&'()*+,-./:;<=>?@[]_` {|}~\¡¢£¤¥¦§¨©ª«¬-®¯°±²³´¶¸¹º»¼½¾¿ÀÁÂÃÄÅÆÇÈÉÊËÌÍÎÏÐÑÒÓÔÕÖ×ØÙÚÛÜÝÞàáâãäåæçèéêëìíîïðñòóôõö÷øùúûüýþ

      Must not contain spaces

Building a Globally Unique User Name

A globally unique user name (UN) is one that is unique across all school districts in the nation or across the globe. Of course, that global uniqueness is only relevant within the specific platform database in which the user name is used. To help you arrive at a globally unique user name within the HMH platforms, we have included three possible methods for you to consider:

District-Unique UN plus District and State

Depending on the uniqueness of your district name in your state, you may be able to build a globally unique UN by appending your district-unique user name with the district name and state code.

Example: JDOE@Riverside.CA (District-Unique User Name + District + State Code)

Note: Do not use the school name because students often move between schools, which may cause duplicates.

District-Unique UN plus District Email Domain

Depending on the uniqueness and length of your district domain, you may be able to build a globally unique UN by appending your district-unique user name with the district email domain.

Example: JDOE@Riverside.k12.ca.us (District-Unique User Name + District Email Domain)

      District-Unique UN plus District PID

You may build a globally unique UN by appending your district-unique user name with the district MDR PID.

Example: JDOE-12345 (District-Unique User Name + District MDR PID)

Note: Do not use the school PID because students often move between schools, which may cause duplicates.
