Log in to the Student App from HMH Student Central.
From the HMH Gateway, log in with your teacher credentials, then click the HMH Teacher Central icon.
HMH’s Interchangeable Literacy Licenses allow teachers and administrators to move students from READ 180 Universal to System 44 Next Generation using the same license. See Using Interchangeable Literary Licenses for details.
Projecting the Digital Teacher’s Edition allows you to present a lesson to your class using HMH Teacher Central. You can project the lesson using a single device, such as a desktop or laptop computer, or using multiple devices, such as a desktop and a tablet.
Teachers can use an iPad to access READ 180 Universal through HMH Teacher Central with an active login. Additionally, students can use an iPad to access the Student App and HMH Student Central for READ 180 with an active login.
Interchangeable Literacy Licenses are available for classes that use both READ 180 Universal and System 44 Next Generation.

Teachers will receive a link from their district or school administrator that will allow them to log in to HMH Teacher Central.
To access READ 180 Universal teacher content, you will need to make sure your class is managing the READ 180 Universal product and you have at least one student enrolled in the program. Click here for more information, or see the Class Management section.
Students will need to be enrolled in READ 180 Universal before they can access it. Use the Class Management tab in HMH Teacher Central to enroll students. See Class Management.
Once students are enrolled, use the link received from the district or school administrator and direct students to open it in a browser window, then log in using their SAM username and password.
READ 180 Universal can only be deployed in a hosted environment.
By default, all READ 180 Universal media files will reside on a CDN (Content Delivery Network) located in our data center. For any bandwidth-challenged districts, please contact Tech Services or the Help Desk to discuss other alternatives..
Student and teacher licenses are requested and managed by your district or school administrator. You can see how many student licenses are available on the Enrollments screen under your Class Profile on the Class Management tab in HMH Teacher Central. If you need to have licenses added, contact your district or school administrator.
Only Lexile measures from READ 180 Enterprise Edition and READ 180 Next Generation will migrate. Note that programs like Reading Inventory and Phonics Inventory are unchanged. So, historical data for those programs will still be available in SAM.
Reading Counts! may be accessed through the HMH Gateway. It does not share data with READ 180 Universal, Independent Reading, or HMH Teacher Central, but it can still be used as a standalone program.

Past editions of READ 180 were accompanied by the appropriate version of rSkills Tests. In READ 180 Universal, rSkills Tests has been replaced by the Workshop Assessments. The content and functions are very similar to rSkills, and assessment results are reported to HMH Teacher Central.
Workshop Assessments may be accessed from the Assessment menu in HMH Student Central.
rSkills College & Career may still be accessed through the HMH Gateway. However, it does not share data with READ 180 Universal, Independent Reading, or HMH Teacher Central, but it can still be used as a standalone program.

The structure of the READ 180 content was changed such that there are no longer topics that organize the segments. Instead, the segments are organized by cluster, allowing the student to choose more freely.
Leveling was changed such that there are now 5 levels in A, 6 levels in B and C. This allows for better targeting of students’ Lexile measures and allows them to move up more quickly.
Three new zones were added: the Explore Zone, Language Zone, and Fluency Zone (built from the Spelling and Word Zones). The Explore and Language Zones focus on building background and vocabulary knowledge.
The student path is now differentiated so that student in levels 1-3 complete the traditional Success Zone path and student in levels 4-6 skip Context Task and instead complete the Stretch Read activity.
There’s now a comprehension strategy focus to each visit to the Reading Zone, which entails strategy-related supports and comprehension questions. The questions are also now aligned to Webb’s DOK levels, and student performance determines which DOK level then encounter.
There are additional opportunities for students to rate their performance and their understanding. There are two new writing types to the Writing Zone, with argumentative writing being joined by informative and narrative writing.
Yes. Go to the Student App section of Resources in HMH Teacher Central and you may access passages for each segment at all six levels. You can also download a vocabulary study for each segment and writing prompts for the segments in a format where students can take notes to Plan, Organize, and Write their responses.
To exit the Student App quickly, click “X” from the Student App screen, then click Yes from the confirmation screen.

Yes. Open the Digital Teacher's Edition and click a workshop from the Table of Contents. Scroll down the right side of the page and you will see printable lessons and pacing/planning guides. I am printing individual student reports, but the name of the student is not appearing on the report. Is there a way to fix or work around this? Yes. This could be a compatibility issue between READ 180 Universal and the browser. Try using a different browser, using the browser’s Print function, or saving the file as a PDF and then printing the PDF.
Yes. Teachers may download the Student App from the App Store and access HMH Student Central, HMH Teacher Central, and Independent Reading through the iPad browser.

No. The Student Application is only supported on iPads when the app has been downloaded from the iTunes store and configured on the iPad to ensure full functionality with recording.

Previously released HMH mobile apps can continue to be used alongside READ 180 Universal. For mixed model usage with System 44, the System 44 iOS app remains necessary for use on iPads.
READ 180 Universal teachers will use HMH Teacher Central instead of SAM and the Teacher Dashboard. HMH Teacher Central will allow teacher to plan and teach a class, run reports, find resources, and enroll students in class.
Yes. HMH Teacher Central contains a Projection Mode function, which allows the content to be displayed to the class and controlled from the teacher’s mobile device. Click here for detailed instructions on projecting READ 180 Universal content in HMH Teacher Central.
No. Students may only work in one READ 180 Universal segment at a time.
READ 180 Universal is based on HTML5. This is different than READ 180 Next Generation and READ 180 Enterprise Edition, which use Flash. READ 180 Universal does not have a microphone check when the program starts like READ 180 Next Generation. Different browsers will use different functions to allow you to use the microphone (consult your browser documentation for more information).
The READ 180 Universal app does work with microphones. Check that the iPad microphone is turned on by tapping Settings, then Privacy, then Microphone. The Microphone slider should be green. Also check that Microphone Access is checked in the READ 180 Universal iPad Settings.
