HMH Growth Measure Assessment Types

The HMH Growth Measures are a collection of research-based benchmark assessments that include all of the following types of assessments.

HMH Growth Measure Math offers four assessments:

      GM Math K–8

      GM Math Algebra 1

      GM Math Geometry

      GM Math Algebra 2

HMH Growth Measure Reading offers two assessments:

GM Reading 2–12 – The standard GM Reading 2–12 assessment is an adaptive reading comprehension and language arts test intended for Grade 2–12 students.

Note: The GM Reading assessment for 11th and 12th grade shares the same blueprint, but is scored differently. When you assign the standard Reading GM to 12th-graders, they get the 11th grade test-level blueprint but it is scored using a higher range than the 11th graders. (The 12th grade Reading GM has a Scaled Score range of 1101–1199.)

GM Reading K–2: Foundational Literacy Assessment, also known as the FLA – The FLA is a fixed-form assessment that focuses on foundational literacy skills and provides screening and benchmarking support for younger students (Grades K–2) as well as non-readers. See below for a detailed description of the FLA.

FLA Description

The FLA includes one form with 82 scored items that are organized into three stages. Depending on how students perform in prior stage(s), they can advance to the next stage of questions. Students may see fewer, but no more than 82 scored items in each test.

The assessment provides coverage across five domains:

      Phonological Awareness

      Alphabet Knowledge

Phonics & Word Recognition: High Frequency Words

Phonics & Word Recognition: Letter Sound Correspondence

Phonics & Word Recognition: Nonsense Word Decoding

The assessment accounts for both fluency (how quickly did the student respond to a question) and accuracy for scoring. Like the GM Reading 2–12 assessment, the FLA’s primary score is the Scaled Score and is presented as FLA-01 to FLA-99. Similar to the other Growth Measures, it is also aligned to common core and most state standards and reports through the Growth and Standards Reports.
